May 2018 VIETNAM National Foreign Language Project expands teacher training in classroom English competence
The National Foreign Languages Project of Vietnam (formerly Foreign Languages Project 2020) under the MoET (Ministry of Education and Training) has prioritized teacher training in Classroom English Competence using ELTeach. The Project is expanding the training to over 3,000 teachers. DoETS and English language specialists continue to report that teachers request ELTeach training over other training courses available. Public sector teachers in areas such as the Mekong Delta and across the country are expected to participate in ELTeach courses starting in June and running throughout the year.
March 2018 TESOL session on Redefining classroom English competence
A panel was held today at International TESOL in Chicago, Illinois on the topic of Redefining classroom English competence. This session examined the online approach using ELTeach to building capacity to to deliver English language instruction that has been implemented successfully in 24 countries. The presenters and panel members from three countries discussed the challenges as well as the successes of implementation. Topics addressed by the panel included
--An overview of the need in English language teaching for rethinking teacher language competence to support teachers in creating more effective language learning environments in the English classroom.
--A description of teacher language competence, based on an English for specific purposes model, called English for Teaching. This model takes into account the language and skills teachers can use in enacting lessons on a daily basis in the language classroom.
--Case studies of effective implementation of the model by panelists from three countries where the model has been successfully implemented.
January 2018 US State Department and World Learning sponsor ELTeach for teachers in Afghanistan
With the success of previous implementations, the US Department of State decided to expand the scope of its ELTeach sponsorship with an implementation in Afghanistan. Teachers throughout Afghanistan participated in both English-for-Teaching and Professional Knowledge using a blended learning approach developed by World Learning.
January 2018 US State Department and World Learning renew sponsorship of ELTeach for Madrasa teachers in India
Based on the success of the 2017 implementation, the US Department of State sponsored a second implementation of ELTeach with Madrasa teachers in Southern India from January to August 2018. World Learning managed the implementation, using a blended learning approach, with coordinators managing cohorts of teachers in ‘training communities’. The program was launched with a five-day training of trainers (ToT) program, after which the trainers led peer learning hubs in face-to-face workshops.
March 2017 Saudi Ministry of Education awards teachers Certificates of Completion from ELTeach training
Today, the Ministry of Education awarded over one thousand certificates of completion to public sector school teachers who successfully completed the ELTeach training program. ELTeach is an online program for public school teachers to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to teach English in English. The program had completion rates of over 80 percent. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia now has an implementation model for wider scale usage with teaching cohorts led by regional coordinators who are now familiar with the tools and processes for supporting an online learning professional development program.
February 2017 LEiA Journal publishes Developing Classroom English Competence: Learning from the Vietnam Experience
A compilation of articles presented in the Language Education in Asia (LEiA) journal entitled, Developing Classroom English Competence: Learning from the Vietnam Experience, Cambodia, 2017 and sponsored by CAMTESOL and National Geographic Learning, highlights how one national education system—Vietnam-- has tackled the challenge of developing their students’ English language proficiency by adopting an innovation in thinking about teacher language proficiency, including the Vietnam experience implementing the ELTeach program. The edited volume includes chapters examining the argument for developing teacher’s classroom English proficiency, the design of a course for developing classroom English proficiency, an analysis of implementation data of the course, lessons learned, and implications for other ELT reform efforts in other regions and countries.

Between January and July 2017, the US Department of State sponsored an implementation of ELTeach with Madrasa teachers throughout India. World Learning managed the implementation, using a blended learning approach, with coordinators managing cohorts of teachers in ‘training communities’. The program was launched with a five-day training of trainers (ToT) program, after which the trainers led peer learning hubs in face-to-face workshops. The implementation ended with a final conference and closing ceremony. This quote from a participant highlights the program’s success, “My students speak more English in my classes than before I took the ELTeach courses.”
November 2016 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Education trains more teachers using ELTeach program
Following previous pilots of National Geographic Learning's ELTeach program, the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia is launching training for over one thousand public school teachers from fifteen regions in order to raise the quality of English language instruction in the Kingdom. The training begins this month with an initial orientation where teachers will gain access to the online learning program for teaching English in English as well as Professional Knowledge for ELT. These public-sector school teachers will follow the self-access curriculum and attend face-to-face trainings run by supervising teachers. Each course of instruction is expected to take five months.

April 2016 IATEFL session on Developing skills for teaching English in English
This session entitled Developing skills for teaching English in English at IATEFL in Birmingham, England examined an online approach to professional development based on the concept of “professional confidence.” Congruent with research on adult online learning, the approach provided teachers with English language skills that transfer into greater assurance in using English in the classroom and included implementation data from trials of the ELTeach program in Asia and Central America.
